Spiros Ornerakis was born in Chania, Crete in 1942. His first visual memories stem from his home town and close surroundings. He was 18 years of old when he moved to Athens to study stage and interior design. Following military service and for some time after that he worked as an illustrator in advertising. He worked as an art director in Minos advertising. He started working for the press in 1971 with the magazine "tahidromos" as a cover supervisor and caricaturist.
At the same time his work was published in "ta nea" and "vima". Following the change in the political scenery in 1974 he worked for a number of broadsheets before starting his present collaboration with the NEA.
During this time he also worked as stage designer as well as cartoonist.
